Silhouette Tutorial: DIY “LOVE” Themed Wood Art

While I love celebrating Valentine’s Day, it is a holiday that I don’t spend a lot of decorating for…..primarily because I don’t have the funds to spend
(especially after all of the money I put toward Christmas).   BUT, because my
house really feels bare after Christmas, it is a must to have a little something that represents Valentine’s Day.  Since I recently got a Silhouette Cameo machine, I decided
I would make something!    The best part of DIY projects is that you don’t have to spend
a lot of money and you can add your own personal touch!
I particularly wanted something that would fit in with the colors of our home
(red and black).  I wanted to make something that doesn’t have to be taken down after February 14th, but rather a piece that could stay on display the remainder of the year.
This little project is something you all can make at home, whether you have a Silhouette machine or not.  It’s really that simple.  Just follow the simple tutorial
below to create your own “LOVE” themed wood art.

Items I used for this project:

                                         * 4 large red paper clip holders (dollar section at Michaels)
*Martha Stewart Brand Paint (any color you choose)
                                         * ArtMinds 2pc Craft Wood Squares (Michaels)
                                         *Masking or Painters Tape
*Silhouette Glitter Tubs (any glitter brand works)
                                         *Silhouette Double Sided Adhesive Paper
I chose red paint for the border.  Paint the entire board first.  To be sure the wood grain does not peek through, I painted 2-3 coats before the going on to the next step.
Measure the thickness you want your border to be and tape the edges.
Be sure you seal the edges well so paint doesn’t get underneath.
You want clean, crisp lines when you remove the tape.
I chose black paint for the middle section so my glitter letters would contrast against this nicely. Because you will paint over the red, you will need to apply 2-3 coats of black.
Once the paint is fully dry, remove the tape and touch up any areas that may have leaked through or under the tape.  I used a sponge brush to do all of the painting!
Now it is time to print out and align your letters.  I’ve included my free cut file below.  The text used is KB Next to Me Solid (dimensions – 2.5 in. height and 2.0 in. width).  Once you print cut with the silhouette, make sure the yellow backing is on each letter.

Now, take off the back of each letter (Yellow Side).  Stick each letter onto the black space. One recommendation I have is to use your spatula tool to flatten out each letter so now bubbles or creases form when pressing down.  This will help the letter stick better.
Carefully remove the top layer (White Side) to reveal the adhesive.  The letters
should be transparent and sticky!  If you see any parts of a letter
that are bubbling, use your spatula to flatten it out.
Now comes the fun part!  Sprinkle away!  When I first tried this, I used pink glitter.  I would not suggest using pink against red.  They don’t contrast enough.  I chose to use gold instead to give it more of a pop!  It turned out wonderfully!

When you’re all done, you can gently place each wooden board into the paper clip holder and find a place to put them on display.  They don’t take up a lot of room, so they are easy to put on a mantle, table, shelf, or any kind of ledge!
