Dollar Spot DIY – Wk. 1 (Spring Frame)

A new season has arrived…which means it’s time to decorate! You know what that means?  Time to go shopping! Where else to go when you need some seasonal decor?  None other than…..(drum roll, please)….TARGET!  Some might say (ah hem, cough…my husband), I’m an obsessive “Target Dollar Spot” shopper.   No matter how hard I try to avoid that little section of the store, I never have enough will power.I get sucked in EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I simply can’t contain myself.

Surely, I’m not the only one!  Riiiiight?!?

After buying and hoarding cute baskets, adorable stationary, party decor, and holiday accessories, I finally decided that I need to start putting it all to good use!

Welcome to WEEK 1 of my new series called, “DOLLAR SPOT DIY”.

This past weekend, all of the new Spring and Easter items were stocked and I was in my pastel glory! The three items I decided to scoop up were the white, wooden, rustic chalkboard frame, along with the sky blue adhesive gift wrap and the orange felt carrot pack!  I wasn’t exactly sure how I would tie this all together, but I knew each one was going into my cart.

I soon decided I wanted this door hanger to sport a little saying to celebrate the new season that is upon us.  Yesterday was the mark of Spring, so it was only fitting!

I whipped up this little phrase using fonts from a fabulous bundle at The Hungry Jpeg.  They always have awesome deals going on for a ton of font bundles! For the phrase, “Spring has sprung”, I used two of my favorites, Anemone and Breathe!

. Once I printed it out and cut it down to appropriate size, I used chalk and rubbed it across the back of the paper to outline the lettering.  To learn more about the simple technique, check out this tutorial! It will guide you step by step on how to create a clean look of chalkboard lettering!

After the stencil outline was created, I colored it in with a teal colored chalk paint pen!  The one I used for this project are in the Spring Chalk Marker Set (Recollections brand) from Michaels.  You can get another great set of chalk paint pens HERE.

After finishing with the chalk pens, I cut the blue adhesive paper into strips to put on around the wooden frame.  This was super simple and took hardly any time at all!  It took the white wood from Drab to Fab with a perfect pop of color!

The finishing touches were the orange carrot and a small flower!  These were the perfect embellishments that added a little flare to the frame.  This will be perfect not only for the Easter holiday coming up, but for the entire season of Spring!  Now when I drive past my home each day, I will look at my front door with a smile on my face.  Doesn’t it look bright and cheery?

If you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a fancy wreath for your door, you can create this little gem!  For under $10 total, just visit your local Target and be sure to stop by the Dollar Spot!  In less than an hour’s worth of time, you can put together this DIY Door Hanger!

If you want to give it a more feminine or girly feel, they have yellow and pink adhesive paper, too!  You can create this any way you want by replacing the carrot with an egg, bunny, or any type of add on.  I would love to see the creations you all come up with 🙂
